Polyester is a synthetic material and has many advantages over cotton. It does not absorb water and is therefore much more stain resistant which makes it much easier to hand wash!
Polyester is also extremely tear resistant and more elastic than cotton so it doesn't shrink or stretch out of shape. The fabric is easily dye-able and keeps it's color for longer. Polyester is also fire retardant (melting rather than burning.)
